Monday 11th Feb 12.1km to Cap Martin, wind, rain and freezing cold. 34 mins out, 33 back. 3x chair. It took me about two hours to get the feeling back in my fingers - it was that cold.
Tuesday 12th Feb 10.88km with Psycho and Springbok - split as follows:
Dog and I jogged up the hill to where Psycho and Springbok live for 6am - 1.5km in about 10 mins, pausing every now and again for Dog to ablute, and it was uphill. Then we joined the other two and ran out to Cap Martin. It was a decent pace, and after about 2km Psycho and Springbok speeded up for a 300m sprint. Dog and I did our best to keep up, but couldn't really, and so we were running faster than comfortable for a longer time to try and catch them up.
On the way back to MC, we speeded up, and then we did another sprint - once again Dog and I had to run even faster to try and catch them up, but once we had caught them, we overtook coming into MC and kept the pace high for a longer period, until the last uphill section when we had to slow down a bit. We got to my house after 7.5km in about 37 mins - plus the 1.5k, so 9km overall.
Then something new for me....the hideous stairs next to my house....Psycho's new thing is to sprint up the stairs in intervals, 1 stair at a time, slow on the way back down, up again 2 stairs at a time, slow down the stairs, then up 3 stairs at a time. Dog rebelled and sat down after the 2nd ascent. I tried my best to follow them (Psycho and Springbok) - 1 stair I can do but was slower. Then I was quicker down obviously. Then 2 stairs I was ok at - managed to keep up with them, and was still quicker on the way down and seemed to recover quicker, and then 3 stairs at a time...I couldn't do it. I am just not tall enough - both Psycho and Springbok are well over 6 foot - I am a mere 5'10. Perhaps if I jumped more, but anyway, I did the 2 stairs at a time again. Then we repeated the intervals and did it again - 1+2+2. Then we ran to the coffee shop and had an espresso, and then I ran home again to do chair, abdos and press ups. All in all, everything included (I paused timer for the espresso), it was 63 mins, 10.70km.
Wednesday 13th Feb UBx5 MC
Thursday 14th Feb 16.5km - split into 10km of hill sprints up and down the Avenue Varavilla, then a fast clip out to Cap martin and back. 1hr 34. 3x chair
Friday 15th Feb 5x Ub in MC, lots of insurance stuff, meeting with the traffic office to declare my car as a write off and apply for a certificate, and then root canal surgery.
Saturday in MC, 27km to Italy and back (picture attached) at dawn. It was a lovely pre dawn - a bit warmer than of late, although still chilly with snow on the hills behind the coast. I went out pretty slow, with just a bottle of water, and watched the sunrise over Italy, warming my face. There were plenty of other runners out, cyclists, etc all making use of the fabulous morning, and getting in some early weekend exercise. After 13.5km, I turned around, and fended off a junk sales call to my mobile (who does that at 8am on a Saturday morning?). Running back was equally lovely, the sea lapping at the shore to my left, and the waiters putting out the tables to make use of the sunshine and attract early morning punters. I noticed a car with a caved in nose and hazard lights flashing after about 15.5km however, the car parked in the wrong lane and turning left. In front of it was a mountain bike - lying in the road, and behind it was a crushed carbon road bike. A person was lying prone on the floor, covered with a blanket. There were several people milling around, but after hesitating for a minute or two, I decided that I could add little value as an ambulance was being called, and there were people to direct traffic etc. I ran on. I did not witness the accident, but it seemed to me that the car had hit the cyclist head on - the car travelling in the wrong lane and cutting the corner to turn left into the road. The cyclist had had no chance to stop as he was travelling in the correct lane, and had been hit head on. It must have been a nasty shunt. Unfortunately, after my recent troubles, it set me back a bit on the run - which I was really enjoying, although I did manage to push on home - including Hernia Hill ascention, and got home 3 minutes quicker than the outlap. Total KMs 27.17k, and 2hrs 29 of running. 4 lots of chair, some brekkie, insurance forms and off we went to the Country Place.
This is where things got interesting - we had Raclette at home, and did some jobs (log stacking and so on) and then we went out for dinner early with the kids to the local curry house. We parked in the supermarket car park, and were expecting a quick in and out. Sadly the solitary waiter was poorly schooled in the art of service - and we walked out at 8.15pm - 15 minutes after the car park closed for the night. Not knowing what else to do, we walked the 4km home in the dark - 2 of the kids enjoying the adventure and the other one petrified. We managed to find a loose Dalmatian on our way, so we repatriated that with the - unsurprised - owner, and collapsed at home with a glass of wine, in front of the fire.
The next day - Sunday 17th Feb, earlyish start to try and free the car - so we walked into town - 3km or so, established the car park was still locked, and went to another affiliated supermarket - who told us no, we couldn't have our car back until 9am Monday morning. Thanks. So we had a nice omlette in Vence, bought some cheese and dried sausage from the farmer's market and walked home. I then did a 5 set UB in the gym, and some jobs, and then watched a couple of movies with the kids - Flashdance, and the Exotic marigold Hotel, both fine movies in their own way. An early night for Mrs R and I.
Monday 18th - today - I got up at 6am, donned my headlamp, and jogged into vence taking the long route. I did 6.5km in 41 mins, and then turned around and a lot quicker back, 34 mins, although helped by the hill. I managed 4x chair, then a very quick dip in the pool, and got myself brekkie whilst firing up the home PC equipment, and woke Mrs R. She then went for her run - and on the way back repatriated the car. Phew.....
Soooooo.....all in all a busy time. I was going to try and do some cycling at some point too, as we are off skiing next week and the opportunities for cycling will be limited. Although, Wednesday I have to go back to the dentist to get some more stuff done to my teeth, and hopefully finish off the insurance claim documents. We will see.
